Susan was inspired to create this design by her visits to Maeshowe tomb in the heart of neolithic Orkney. The entertaining and informative tour guide Sarah turns out the lights and shines her torch on the ancient viking carving of the dragon. With endless patience she carefully points out the finer details of the design carved into the stone wall of the tomb. The enamel colours represent the torch light illuminating the ancient sandstone and highlighting the fabulously preserved carving found inside the chamber. The hand carved dragons give a clearer three dimensional aspect to the design and they are either side of the precious amber gemstone, guarding the treasure much beloved of the vikings. The vikings wrote in carved runes about treasure found in the tomb that had been taken before their arrival. The Maeshowe Dragon is the real treasure.
