The Workshop
The Studio features a viewing window from the Gallery through to the Workshop where visitors can watch Goldsmith Susan Plowman working at her bench.
Susan Plowman graduated from The Glasgow School of Art with a B.A.(Hons.) in Silversmithing and Jewellery. Susan mainly works to commission specialising in fine stone set jewellery and traditional enamelling techniques both Cloisonne and Plique-a-jour. The enamel is ground to the consistency of fine sand with an agate mortar and pestle. The ground enamel is then packed in layers on precious metal using specially shaped goose quills. Sterling silver, fine silver and gold are the only metals used. The piece is then dried and fired in a kiln. Plique-a-jour pieces, those resembling stained glass, take longer to make and may have to be fired up to ten times to achieve perfect results. The finished piece is then carefully polished by hand. Susan Plowman is a member of The British Society of Enamellers, The Crafts Council , The Society of Contemporary Jewellers and was a prize winner in the National Museums Competition- Scottish Gold.
